SOMA HEALTH Full-circle health is a combination of spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and social attributes--in balance and proportion. Our ability to function effectively in our environment depends on these attributes. Of all the qualities that make up an integrated personality--a well-developed, fit body is basic. WATER The human body is about two-thirds water. It is important to drink pristine water with the proper pH. pH readings from water vary according to amounts of minerals, contamination, and the amount of nitric acid, carbonic acid, sulphuric acid, and formic acid in the water. Pure uncontaminated water without minerals has a pH of 7.0 more... PH Understanding pH and why many people have disease: Being too acidic creates a condition favorable to the growth of bacteria, yeast, and other unwanted organisms. Scientists have found over 200 degenerative diseases linked to low acidic pH levels -- including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, gall and kidney stones, and many more. Two factors that are always present with cancer no matter what else may be present, acid pH and a lack of oxygen. Cancer could very well be our bodies trying to survive the conditions we’ve allowed them to deteriorate to. Perhaps a better way of putting this is: cancer is the result of your cells trying to survive a condition that you won't. A person with an acid imbalance will generally have a resting respiratory rate of 19 or more and if they take a deep breath will only be able to hold it for 40 seconds or less. Why? Because carbon dioxide is used by the body to regulate pH. If the body is highly acidic, the brain tells the body to breathe faster to get rid of the acidic carbon dioxide. Now, it is important to note that acid means lack of oxygen and that bacteria and germs and fungus all survive without oxygen. When we are acidic we lose our oxygen and our negative charge, our bodies clean-up crew goes to work. Candida is part of the cleanup crew. As this yeast turns into a fungus, it spreads its thin mycelia throughout our bodies attacking other organs. The clean-up crew produces wastes called mycotoxins. One of the wastes is uric acid, another is alcohol, and yet another is aflatoxin, one of the most potent carcinogens known. Once our system is acidic, and once the clean-up crew kicks in, we start to get diseased tissues. Once we have diseased tissues, outside germs can find a favorable environment in which to grow. They produce the secondary illnesses we, in this modern culture, call illness or disease. As amazing as it can seem, germs are attracted to the diseased tissues, they are not the primary cause of it. The symptoms of the first stage of acidosis are so common that most people simply take a pain killer or some over the counter medication to mask the symptoms: headaches, food allergies, bloating, acne, panic attacks, lack of energy, lack of sex drive, cold hands and feet, agitation, hard to sleep, hard to get up, sinus headaches, and an increased susceptibility to colds and flu and whatever's going around. The symptoms in phase two might bring you to a doctor, but still, some just self-medicate: cold sores, hives, depression, migraines, asthma, urinary tract infections, fungal infections, yeast infections, swelling, colitis, tingling, excessive falling hair, osteoarthritis, and atherosclerosis. If you have toenail fungus, then take note that this fungal infection goes much further than just under your toenails. It is all over your body. And no drug (diflucan) will end it, though it might clear up symptoms for a while. The final stages of acidosis are chronic, debilitating diseases: Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, leukemia, all cancers, Hodgkin's disease, schizophrenia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and tuberculosis just to name a few. * Mild acidosis can cause such problems as: *Cardiovascular damage, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen. *Weight gain, obesity and diabetes. Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones. *Immune deficiency. *Acceleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations. *Hormone concerns. *Premature aging. *Osteoporosis; weak, brittle bones, hip fractures and bone spurs. *Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid buildup. *Low energy and chronic fatigue. *Slow digestion and elimination. *Yeast/fungal overgrowth. The first steps in maintaining health is to pH balance the body. This is one of the most important aspects of homeostasis. Changes in pH alter virtually all body functions. The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are below a pH of 7.0. The more acidic the cell, the sicker we become. If the body cannot alkalize the cells they will become acidic and thus, disease sets in. Our bodies produce acid as a by product of normal metabolism. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkalinity, we must supply the alkalinity from an outside source to keep us from becoming acidic and dying. Maintaining proper pH is essential for life, health, and vitality. If your body’s pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals, and food supplements. An alkalinizing diet reduces cravings and addictions; it also helps with detoxification. Body pH affects over all health. Although it is somewhat controversial, many people agree that your urinary pH should fluctuate between 6.5 to 6.8, and that your saliva pH should fluctuate and always be be above 7.2. When urine pH is 6.5 and below for extended periods, it is an indication that the body’s fluids elsewhere are too acid, and it is working overtime to rid itself of an acid medium. The pH of urine indicates the efforts of the body via the kidneys, adrenals, lungs, and gonads to regulate pH through the buffer salts and hormones. Urine can provide a fairly accurate picture of body chemistry. Urine pH can vary from around 4.5 to 9.0 for its extremes, but the ideal pH range for the urine is between 6.5 and 6.8. There are five alkaline-forming minerals, also known as acid-binding minerals. These minerals are: calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, and iron. Each of these are important for creating a healthy alkaline environment. These minerals bind with acid minerals and evacuate those acidic and toxic substances. Consuming more alkaline foods allows for a mucus free body. Urine testing can indicate how well your body is assimilating minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. These are called the “acid buffers” because they are used by the body to control the acid level. If acid levels are too high, the body will not be able to excrete acid. It must either store the acid in body tissues (autotoxication) or buffer it—that is, borrow minerals from organs, bones, etc. in order to neutralize acidity. There are many false pH readings. The urine pH may be acid. But if the acidosis is caused by excess potassium in the system, the kidneys will dump potassium and retain hydrogen. Here the urine is alkaline while the body fluids are acid. Furthermore, a person who has a highly acidic diet and their urinary pH is 6.8 or higher, it is highly probable that that the body may be in the ammonia cycle of the liver to help deal with the acid. This situation denotes that there are depleted mineral, alkaline, and enzyme reserves. It is almost impossible to balance the urinary pH of people consuming water loaded with carbonic acid. Saliva testing can indicate the activity of digestive enzymes in your body, especially the activity of the liver and stomach. This reveals the flow of enzymes running through your body and shows their effect on all the body systems. You can test your pH at home using litmus paper strips (available at your local pharmacy, health food store, or on-line). Test your urine when you first get up and test the saliva before putting anything in the mouth. (Do not put the test paper directly on your tongue). Testing during the day results in testing what you ate in the previous meal and its temporary effect on the body. Because PH fluctuates you need to test yourself regularly to get an over all accurate reading. HONEY Honey is a naturally sweet substance made by bees by concentrating plant nectars. Bees traveling to and from the hive may cover a distance of 40,000 miles and visit over 2 million plants in their quest to find the finest plant nectars. The most common of all bee products, honey has been used for many centuries for its ability to heal wounds, treat infections and provide fast energy. Many people use honey as a natural sweetener, and it is important to understand why honey is a far healthier alternative to processed sugars. Sugars provide us with energy. All carbohydrates, whether simple sugars or complex carbohydrates, must be broken down to glucose, or blood sugar, before our bodies can absorb them and use them as energy. Honey combines glucose and fructose, when compared to white sugar, which is sucrose. The basic sugar types in honey are more easily assimilated into the bloodstream and thus yield their energy giving properties more quickly and efficiently than with white sugars. The glycogen in a spoonful of honey is said to pass into the bloodstream in ten minutes to produce this ‘quick energy’. Many people refrain from using honey in the belief that it is high in calories and may cause unwanted weight gain. An average teaspoon of honey contains only around 25 calories, and as mentioned above it converts quickly and efficiently into ‘energy’, unlike white sugar. PROPOLIS Propolis is a nutrient-rich substance made by honey bees. It is a resinous substance gathered from deciduous tree bark and leaves. Used as a healing agent for many centuries it has the ability to provide protection against infectious invaders, promote healing and regeneration of tissue, and provides a superior source of energy and stamina. Honeybees create propolis to sterilize the hive and to protect it against outside intruders and infection. It is also used to seal cracks in the hive, and for this reason is often termed ‘bee glue’. Propolis, to a greater extent than the other bee products, is used externally as well is ingested. It is often applied to skin irritations, cuts, rashes and bruises to sterilize and disinfect the wound. It is used in tincture form as a natural alternative to penicillin and other antibiotics. Used as an antibiotic it is said to be particularly safe and effective and inhibits the resistance-building effect that is a negative factor with prescription antibiotics. The fact that viruses and bacteria are unable to build tolerances against propolis is particularly significant to the medical field. In an age where prescription antibiotics are commonly over prescribed, it is becoming more difficult for scientists to remain one step ahead when creating antibiotics to treat viral/bacterial conditions. When antibiotics are taken too frequently, the harmful bacteria that they are designed to eliminate begin to build a resistance to the antibiotic, rendering it impotent. The anti resistance-building properties of propolis have been clinically verified under controlled conditions. Prominent Danish scientist, Dr. K. Lund Aagaard has conducted many tests into the properties of propolis and believes that in propolis he has found a substance with the greatest efficiency against the greatest number of diseases. ROYAL JELLY AND QUEEN BEE One of the most valuable gifts of nature man has ever discovered is Royal Jelly. Royal Jelly, which is produced by honeybees, is used to nourish and sustain the queen bee. The queen bee receives Royal Jelly throughout her entire life span up of eight years. She rules the hive and may lay as many as one quarter of a million eggs in one season alone. Worker bees do not receive Royal Jelly except for the first three days of their lives. They live only from two to six months. The egg from which the queen bee hatches is identical to all the others. This fact has led researchers to the conclusion that her longevity is attributable only to nutrition. Obviously, Royal Jelly contains some very potent substances, which are directly responsible for the queen bee's remarkable vitality. It has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the overall vitality of the human body as well, particularly the reproductive system. Researchers have analyzed Royal Jelly and found that it contains complete proteins, several types of natural sugars, unsaturated fatty acids, and a number of enzymes, and is a rich source of pantothenic acid, nucleic acid, and Vitamin B6. In fact, Royal Jelly is one of the richest sources, per weight, of the Vitamin B complex in a natural form. Chemical Analysis of Honeybee Pollen Honeybee pollen and raw honey are the only food on earth containing all 22 nutrients needed by mankind for complete and perfect health. VITAMINS, NUTRITION, & MORE SUGAR Sugar is a non-nutritive empty calorie that when it is ingested, it robs our systems of vitamins and minerals. It lacks crucial micronutrients. Which means, it more than just non-nutritive, but a hazard to the body. Many people believe that sugar is only bad for you when ingested in enormous amounts, when actually what most people consider to be normal amounts are damaging to the body. Refined sugar enters the bloodstream very rapidly, causing and contributing to health problems. Many people consider refined sugar a legal, but deadly drug. Multitudes of people are hooked on sugar. Kicking a sugar habit can produce withdrawals. The most common are headaches, chills, and body aches. Sugar, like alcohol and some other drugs, is intoxicating. It creates an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Here is a partial list of physical conditions caused or exacerbated by excessive refined sugar intake: overweight, heart disease, raised blood triglycerides, sticky blood platelets, increased stomach acidity, hypoglycemia, diabetes, hyperactivity, kidney enlargement, liver enlargement, increase in uric acid in blood, cancer, hindered breakdown of dietary protein, cavities, calcium leached from teeth, duodenal ulcers, weakened immune system, acne and PMS. Sugar molecules in the blood and in the cells chemically bond to proteins and to DNA. This bonding is called nonenzymatic glycosylation. Over time, the sugar moieties bound to the glycated proteins are chemically modified to become molecular structures called Advanced Glycation Endproducts (A.G.E.s). Some of the A.G.E.s form covalent crosslinks with adjacent protein strands; this crosslinking stiffens tissues which were formerly flexible or elastic. A.G.E.s contribute collagen cross-linking which promotes fibrotic adhesion and collagen fibers in the artery walls of blood vessels to stiffen. Excessive refined sugar consumption is often at the root of these lesser physical symptoms: sleepiness, muscle fatigue, lethargy, pallor, coated tongue, persistent thirstiness, bad breath, heartburn/sour stomach, excessive and/or foul-smelling intestinal gas. It can also cause flu-like symptoms: upset stomach, body ache, and feeling run-down. Here are some of the mental/emotional symptoms that may be linked to excess consumption of refined sugar: irritability, manic-depressive tendencies, chronic or frequent bouts of depression, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness or absentmindedness, lack of motivation, increasing undependability, loss of enthusiasm, and emotional outbursts. Soft drinks are loaded with sugar and many are very acidic, especially colas. It takes about 32 glasses of high pH alkaline water to neutralize glass of cola. It is well known by the medical profession that disease loves acid. The bubbles and fizz in soft drinks can potentially burn human insides: this is caused by the phosphoric acid and carbon dioxide. The phosphorus in the acid upsets the body’s calcium-phosphorus ratio and dissolves calcium out of the bones. This can eventually result in osteoporosis, a weakening of the skeletal structure. The phosphorus also fights with the hydrochloric acid in our stomachs and renders it ineffective. Diet soft drinks are loaded with sugar substitutes (toxic chemicals). We need to avoid ingesting artificially and chemically created substances (as much as we can without being obsessed with it). Carbonation destroys enzymes and the friendly intestinal bacteria required for healthy digestion and immunity. Healthy digestion is key to ensuring that all the nutrients needed to support health and metabolism are available to the cells of the body that need them. Carbon dioxide is a waste product exhaled by humans, but we ingest it when we drink carbonated drinks. Therefore, carbonated drinks make our bodies poor in oxygen. When we are young, it is not difficult to maintain appropriate oxygen levels in our blood, cells, and lungs; and as we age, our systems no longer function at full capacity. There are many contributing factors that reduce the amount of oxygen in our bodies. Soda pop, carbonated beverages, smoking, alcohol, polluted air, stress, illness, lack of appropriate nutrients and exercise, and other things rob us of oxygen. Oxygen is vital to our life. It is the molecule in the blood that carries all of the nutrients throughout our bodies. Oxygen is needed to aid in the conversion of nutrients to energy. Oxygen and water are required for making nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and trace minerals soluble and bioavailable. There are also increased risks of prostate cancer associated with diet, alcohol, and especially beer drinking. The research is abundant and we believe the case is clear; colas, soft drinks, and other carbonated beverages are detrimental to all of us—and should be eliminated from the diet immediately. People are dying and suffering everyday because of what they eat and what they do not eat; premature death and suffering can be prevented by making the right decisions about diet and life-styles. CLEANSING HERBS, FIBER, COLONICS, AND FASTS... ...are essential to help fight colon cancer. Colon hydrotherapy, when combined with other detoxifying programs such as juice fasting, herbal cleanses and/or raw foods can restore the body’s natural balance. We can also reduce our risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, cancer, chronic constipation, and degenerative diseases, by consuming more fiber in our meals and a more vegetarian diet. In preparing for a detoxifying fast, it is important to realize that our body may be full of toxins. Thus, to purge them all at once may make us quite ill. We also become very acidic during fasting, therefore, we should monitor our pH closely. We can die or become extremely ill from high acidity. Fasting is complicated and knowing how and when to properly break a fast is as important as preparing for a fast. We can jeopardize our health or die if we consuming too much protein or the wrong type of protein when breaking a fast. There are many excellent books on fasting available. Juice fasting is recommended. Fasts are not recommended for anyone on medication or with a health condition. Be sure to discuss your fasting plans with your doctor. SUNBATHE, RELAX, & BREATHE DEEP Are you deficient in sunlight? Batteries need electricity to recharge. Our bodies need some sunlight each day to do the same thing. Take off as much clothing as modesty or surrounding allows and then walk or sunbathe for 10-15 minutes. Do not use sunscreen. Sunbathe in the morning or late afternoon or for less time if it is scorching, especially if you are fair-skinned. Human skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Furthermore, sunlight helps clean the skin and stimulate the flow of lymph. Sunscreen should be used during extended periods in the sun, due to increased ultra violet rays from loss of the ozone layer. Stop hurrying--slow down--and relax. When you feel tense or just want to relax, find an open area and sit in the sun, breathe deeply and feel the air and the rays of the sun. Breathe slowly, deeply, and smoothly (more than 90% of our body weight is composed of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon--all elements of the air we breathe). LAUGHTER & MUSIC Laughter is medicine in itself. It has been linked to reductions of immune suppressors such as epinephrine and cortisol. It has a positive affect on hormones and white cell counts, it also increases healing and resistance. It is not a cure-all or an automatic path to health. However, it does increase heart rate, raise blood pressure, speed breathing, and increase oxygen consumption. It has been shown to raise pain tolerance. If medical treatment is required, it can boost its effectiveness. Music has a direct effect on our moods and health. Beautiful music, praise and worship music, and heartfelt lyrics are pleasing to the Spirit within us. However, listening to harsh music with dispirited lyrics has an adverse effect on the mind, body, spirit, and soul. Quality music and sincere positive lyrics are conducive to the underpinning of our development. MASSAGE THERAPY... ...complements a good physical fitness program. It helps blood to flow properly, it helps maintain muscle tone, and aids in the control of lymph buildup. Eyes are an important part of our facial structure. Puffiness can occur around the eyes by accumulation of fat tissue under the skin. A regular massage of the face- by gently stroking this skin in an upward and inward motion toward the nose can help alleviate this fat accumulation. Massage therapy is vital for health. It can also be a powerful ingredient for a maintaining a healthy and loving relationship with a spouse. Books and classes are available. REFLEXOLOGY... ...is the study of massage that penetrates the nerve endings in the feet. A reflexology roller is a highly recommended tool and should be used on a daily basis to control the side effects of wearing shoes. Wearing shoes for extended periods of time is unnatural to the human body: it inhibits blood flow to every organ in the body. It promotes ill health, planting the seeds for future illness. A book on reflexology is good for understanding the importance of this complex subject. RAW VEGETABLE AND FRUIT JUICES Fresh juice energizes our body’s system with a unique blend of minerals, vitamins, high-quality proteins, and life-giving enzymes; our body assimilates these to build and rebuild cells. Use a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and drink several glasses of juice a day. Read a book on the benefits of juicing. Ideally, get a low speed electric juicer that uses gears to extract the juice and ionizes the juice. CALCIUM... ...has been rightfully claimed to be the King of Bio-elements. There are many books on calcium. It is highly suggested that you get one and read it. Calcium can help lower the acidity of your body. Many scientists believe that a calcium deficiency may encourage cancer and other degenerative diseases. Many people are unaware that the calcium they are taking is being stored in the soft tissue, organs and joints, also called calcium deposits, simply because the necessary magnesium is not available to assist the calcium to properly assimilate. Over the years this often becomes arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney stones, calcium deposits, etc. Magnesium is not stored by the body, but is essential for proper absorption of calcium. Once magnesium reserves are restored, we immediately begin to feel more relaxed, bowel function improves (often constipation disappears), energy is restored, we sleep better; the heart, adrenals, and nervous system functions begin to improve. The body systems can begin to balance again. Adequate magnesium dissolved in water will assist any needed calcium to assimilate; it will absorb quickly into the body, and handle excess calcium… gradually dissolving calcium deposits. Calcium is now added to many products i.e. cereals, crackers, juice, antacids etc. However, none of theses products contain magnesium to balance the additional calcium or contain magnesium in a form easily absorbed by the body. Without the magnesium, the calcium actually depletes any magnesium reserves from the body, and deposits itself into the soft tissue, joints, kidneys, arteries etc. For example, if one drinks a glass of pasteurized milk (which is about 8 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium), the body, in order to assimilate the calcium, will have to make up the magnesium imbalance from its own magnesium supply, which most people are depleted in. Furthermore, the casein in the milk protein (used to manufacture white glue) can only be digested by calves, which have 3 stomachs, and have the enzyme to separate the calcium from the casein. The calcium from cows milk passes through the human digestive tract unavailable to us, and is very acidic to our body. GARLIC A powerful healer--the wonder food. Garlic contains antibiotic and anticancer properties. It can help prevent and correct: high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, infection, arthritis, emphysema, asthma, digestive disorders, acne, insomnia, colds, allergies and many other health disorders. PROBIOTICS Most of us start life with a relatively healthy intestinal tract. However, the effects of infections, antibiotics, alcohol, stress, and poor diet very often devastate healthy bacteria.
